Two mannequins stand on display in the shop window of a store on Jalan Abdullah Silondae in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. One has been adorned with a purple blazer and the other with a beaded brown dress. Both are there to lure shoppers into the Joewita Silk Woven-Textile House.
Inside, two teak armoires draped in fabrics stand on opposite corners of the shop. Misrawati, 27, a regular customer, could be seen trying on a maroon diamond-patterned topa modern take on a traditional Southeast Sulawesi motif. "This was only finished last night," she told Tempo two weeks ago.
