Riri Riza Film Maker
Filmmakers must study industry-dictated formulae

Tuesday, April 5, 2016

Riri Riza's love of his profession is manifested not only in the quality of the films he produces, but also in his dedication to spreading the word through teaching. For close to five years, Riri, 45, has taught at the MakassarScreen.coman institute for future cinematographers in the region. Riri, a native of Makassar, visits his hometown several times a year, to share his knowledge and experience, as well as to motivate more young people to go into the profession. "I do this to push filmmakers in eastern Indonesia to produce films," said Riri.

Participants of the MakassarScreen.com also come from Palu, Lombok and Papua. Riri, director of the iconic Laskar Pelangi ('Rainbow Warrior') and many international-award-winning movies, is convinced that film clubs in the provinces are able to raise Indonesia's visibility and reputation in the international world of film. He said they needed support, help to increase knowledge and technique, and the space to create.
