Ending Violence against Women

In some patriarchal societies, violence against women is not uncommon. According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), two out of 11 women in Indonesia are victims of sexual violence committed by their spouses, while one in four women is physically abused by men other than their husbands. In Indonesia, the East Nusa Tenggara region has one of the highest cases of violence against women. The NGO, Indonesian Women’s Association for Justice and Legal Aid Institute (LBH APIK), focuses on helping women and child victims by recruiting paralegals to assist them. Meanwhile, CIS Timor, another NGO, is on a campaign to end the patriarchal mindset of Timorese youths by setting up the Laki-Laki Baru (the New Male) community. Special Paralegals for Women and Children

A legal aid agency has trained locals to work as paralegals in East Nusa Tenggara, to assist with cases of violence against women and children. More and more women are reporting domestic and sexual violence in the region.
