IN May, Gayo coffee became the first Indonesian product to receive the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the European Union. But increasing temperatures, carbon emissions and unreliable rainfall are affecting Gayo coffee’s yield, flavor and aroma. These detriments are unknown to most coffee lovers, but the Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia (SCAI) are organizing origin coffee tours to offer first-hand knowledge on the complexities of coffee production.
