Reviving Age-Old Melodies

Indonesian folksongs are starting to die out, crushed under the popularity of contemporary music. As a response, in the Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi, the Nusantara Culture House (RBN) of Madatte Arts uses traditional musical instruments in its rearrangements of old songs. The RBN, with the aim of promoting traditional tunes, has held performances in many forums including this year’s Polewali Mandar International Folk and Art Festival, August 1-3. Musicians with the Riau Rhythm Chambers Indonesia also rearrange Malay songs under the genre of contemporary world music. Tempo English reports.
