Youths from the Barawai village in the Yapen Islands, Papua, have joined hands to conserve the bird-of-paradise. Their efforts have won them the Kalpataru Award.

Kalvin Mandenasi sees the forests around Barawai- his birthplace- as a second home. Barawai, Yapen Regency, is a tourist destination 2.5-hour away from the major harbor. Every month, Kalvin and four of his friends in the Dorei Jaya Nature Lovers community patrol the forest for a week.
