A Blessing from the Fire arak God

Bali's arak producers believe that the quality of their arak owes to more than a perfect distillation process. Blessings bestowed by Ida Bhatara Arak Api (the god of fire arak) is seen as part and parcel of their livelihood.

NI Made Sutini placed her canang sari (special offering) on a pelangkiran (a portable wooden altar) placed above a clay hearth at the back of her house in Banjar Merita, Karangasem. After placing the offering, she recited a prayer.

Sutini performs this very ritual before distilling palm wine into arak, a process called mumpunin by locals. In the ritual, locals request protection and blessings from the god of fire arak known as Ida Bhatara Arak
