Sometimes even the capital sentence is not enough to satisfy the public’s sense of justice. Demanding instant execution of the convicts in a murder case, angry spectators at a trial session in Magelang, Central Java, last week attacked the courthouse, smashing windows, roof tiles, and ornamental lamps.

The scene at the Magelang District Court last Wednesday was rather unusual. The 50-person main hall located at the foot of Mount Tidar was packed with three times as many spectators, mostly ojek (motorcycle taxis) drivers, while at least 500 others gathered outside.
