Imagine finding yourself boarding a Pelni freighter, back in the days before they only carried passengers, who instead slept and lived on top of the cargo holds, boarding from Kupang, West Timor and setting `sail' for Surabaya, East Java. Perhaps a less than desirable form of transport for those more accustomed to modern air transport, but when you're a backpacker money is often sparse and besides, there's always the adventure factor.
