What Can We Say?
Monday, 11 September 2000
The killing of UN workers in Atambua proves that the problem of refugees on the East Timor border needs immediate resolution.
WHAT can we say to the families of Caceres-Collazo, Samson Aregahegn and Pero Simundza? What explanation can we offer to answer the question of why were they killed and burned? The three United Nations workers came to Atambua to help disburse aid to the refugees, and their safety had been guaranteed by the Indonesian security forces.
No words, probably, will suffice. However, it does not necessarily mean that nothing can be done.
