PUBLISHING has often been called the “accidental profession” because few of its practitioners ever purposefully intended to become publishers. Publishing is also known as the “gentleman’s profession” because publishers like to think of themselves as following a higher calling, guided principles and good manners. That might be so, but publishing is also a high-risk, hard-nosed and intensely competitive business.
