Because their workers relentlessly staged protests to demand pay rises, about 190 garment factories in West Java have now closed down. Orders for Reebok shoes have been drastically reduced, laying off thousands of workers. Likewise, orders for Nike shoes have also dropped, causing thousands more to be jobless.
