The time has come for Indonesia to cut loose from the IMF. But the attempt will face obstacles. The following is an abstract on Dr. Rizal Ramli's views.

In early May 1998, the Indonesian Government had just increased prices in compliance with the IMF approved program. Riots immediately flared in several cities, peaking on May 13 in Jakarta. The fact that the IMF ignited riots is not unusual in the history of that world finance organization. The same was experienced in a number of Latin American countries. We just refuse to accept it as a bitter lesson.
