THREE witches appear on the path as generals Macbeth and Banquo cross the dark, foggy heath in rain and thunder. They are returning home from a victorious battle. Half fearful, half curious, they are transfixed by the three weird creatures—three figures praising Macbeth as Thane of Glamis and Thane of Cawdor, as part of an even more fantastic prediction; that he shall be king hereafter.
