SOMETIMES I wonder what possibly could have crossed my father’s mind in the few moments before he was executed. Sometimes I want to imagine that the name ‘Indonesia’ was on his lips, or ‘Indonesian independence’, but of course this imagined image is a cliché, and thus whenever it appears I quickly stop it. It is possible that my father was terrified before the Dutch army firing squad. Or resigned, perhaps? What is more or less certain
