Like children everywhere, I could memorize the words and tune of "The First of May ", but I didn't really understand what they meant. In those days, the word proletariat was sometimes replaced with "the workforce" or "the workers"but what "workers" actually meant I had no idea. Workers was not a foreign word, but I could hardly understand what was special about these people whose energy was sucked
