Birth is the beginning as yet untouched by history. When it symbolizes the arrival of a teaching, then that teaching can be assumed to be still ‘innocent’—as yet untested by interpretation, conflict, denial and violence.
THERE is always something joyful in celebrations, but there is always something disturbing. Also in a celebration of birth.
A friend of mine who is often called ‘fundamentalist’ and who is a regular church-goer, said that he and his group refuse to celebrate the birth of Christ in merriment. They reject Christmas.
