WHEN you live in poor, drug-smeared alleys stained with blood, when you live in the underworld of large cities where gangs shoot people as though shooting chickens, when you live in the favela of Rio de Janeiro, where 20 percent of the people live in abject squalor, in other words, when you are part of the Cidade de Deus that the director Fernando Meirelles depicts, is it possible to free yourself from evil?
