STANDING on a hill in southern Bandung, West Java, Col. Abdul Haris Nasution swept his gaze across the horizon, from Cimahi in the west to Ujungberung in the east. It was Sunday night, March 24, 1946, and Nasution was accompanied by Bandung’s Military Police Commander, Maj. Rukana. At exactly 8pm, they watched as Bandung was engulfed in flames.
