The Rebirth—10 Years On

The anniversary fell on Monday, October 6. The offices opened early in the morning, with editorial meetings lasting through midday. The reporters were out in force seeking news sources and the editors were busy allocating the week’s pages, assigning photographers to their tasks and consulting with the layout artists all the way past sundown. No one was thinking of celebrating or being reminded of the day of the magazine’s rebirth. But time moved on, and 10 years have since passed. People came and went, some returned. Many blossomed, others perished. It is time to reflect and look back at how a dream once snuffed out, managed to come back and grow again.

TEMPO magazine was born twice, living in two extremely different phases. The first was on March 6, 1971 when Tempo existed under Suharto and his New Order. It was an era, bitter and painful—affecting the choices of news presentation and style. That, however, did not change the editorial policy. The first phase ended on June 21, 1994, when Suharto closed down this magazine.
