One day before the Balinese commemorate the festival of Silence or Nyepi, a gigantic puppet depicting a terrifying ogre is paraded around town, as if to remind the populace they must remain indoors in absolute silence, throughout the day and blackened night. In this picture, the ogre Kala waves to and fro in the streets of Merdeka Barat in Jakarta, only to be set aflame at the end of the ritual.
