When Madiun was already under Siliwangi and Brawijaya troops’ control on September 30, 1948 the communists dispersed. The largest exodus—thousands of them—went south. In the second week of October, Musso and Amir Sjarifoedin had a row at Tegalombo, Ponorogo, East Java. Musso then separated while on the run and was only guarded by two men.
