JUST by it name, the illness Theodora Dyah Ayu Ratnaningsih has been suffering from since 2012 sounds scary: toxic struma nodosa, or Plummer's disease. The affliction is an extremely rare form of aggressive cancer, four kinds at once, which in Theodora's case have embedded themselves in the papillary of the 28-year-old woman's thyroid gland. The team of doctors at Jakarta's Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) treating her say she is the first person in the world stricken by it.

It took two years for the doctors to reach a final diagnosis on the cancer that attacked Theodora's upper throat. In that time she had to undergo a range of diagnostic tests which have emptied her purse. By the beginning of last year, the woman from Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, had spent almost Rp200 million on medicine and an operation.
