Blessed Connection

Tuesday, July 1, 2014

SITTING cross-legged beside his father's grave, Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo appeared solemn as he offered his prayers. Then he rose to approach his mother, who held a basket of flowers to be strewn on the grave. Joko's three younger siblings-Iit Sriyantini, Ida Yati, and Titik Relawati-were also on hand.

On that Saturday three weeks ago, Jokowi, as he is known, had taken time from his busy schedule to pay homage at the grave of his father, Wijiatmo Notomiharjo, in Gondangrejo, Central Java. The prayer and wreath-laying ritual lasted less than 30 minutes.
