THE Great Postal Road, which is approximately 1,000 kilometers long and was built on the order of Herman Willem Daendels, the 36th governor-general of the Dutch Indies, 207 years ago, remains the main route for transporting people and goods on Java. From May 1808 to July 1809, Daendels pushed with an iron fist to ensure the completion of its construction.
