SUTOMO was enthusiastic about making the trip to Jakarta in early October 1945. The head of the information section of the Youth of the Republic of Indonesia (PRI) in Surabaya was curious about the latest situation in the capital city after British forces had landed in Indonesia at the end of the previous month.

Jakarta turned out to be a disappointment for Sutomo. He saw convoys of Allied trucks carrying soldiers up and down the streets. The 25-year-old also saw the Dutch flag raised in front of the former headquarters of the Japanese army in the heart of Jakarta.
