Darkness will envelop 11 Indonesian cities during a total solar eclipse on the morning of March 9. This will be the first such eclipse to take place in Indonesia in the 21st century. "It will be a particularly special eclipse for Indonesia, as its path will move from West to East," said Premana W. Premadi, an astronomy professor at the Bandung Institute of Technology.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and the sun. This phenomenon can only happen during a new moon. The positions, direction of movement and relative distances of the earth, moon and sun all determine whether the eclipse will be partial, annular, or total.
