Dozens of employees' buses kicked off the day in Bontang City in East Kalimantan one Monday morning in the third week of April. A number of mid-sized buses had even been waiting at the meeting point since 5am local time. In the middle of town, thousands of workers from a number of companies were then taken to the coastal area of Bontang. The trip to the workplace takes about twenty minutes without traffic.
Most of those employees work at the three largest companies in Bontang. One of them is the Badak Natural Gas Liquefaction, a multinational company, while the two others, Pupuk Kaltim and Indominco Mandiri, deal in coal processing. "They keep the economy pulsing here," said Bontang mayor Neni Moerniaeni.
