FOR the first time, a silent film was accompanied by a live gamelan orchestra. It was Rahayu Supanggah who created the layered composition for Garin Nugroho’s silent film, Setan Jawa.

THERE is a small trophy on Rahayu Supanggah’s shelf in his Solo home, Central Java. Panggah is a gamelan (traditional Javanese orchestra) composer and a winner of the 2017 Best Original Score Helpmann Award in the Industry category. The Helpmann Awards are given every year by an Australian institution to appreciate works in the performance industry exhibited in the country the whole year round.
