Since it obtained recognition from the UNESCO as a non-tangible cultural heritage on October 2, 2009, batik has achieved prima donna status. Batik has become the requisite attire worn by all manner of society for all sorts of occasions. The batik market, too, continues to thrive.

Batik in huge quantities are sold from the kiosks of traditional marketplaces, shopping centers and malls, and through online stores. Such enthusiasm for batik has abetted the rise and onslaught of printed batik, that is, textiles brandishing batik motifs but which are produced using machines. Its overwhelming onslaught has bowled over hand-designed batik, known as batik tulis, which has existed for centuries.
