Eight pairs of candidates for gubernatorial posts signed a declaration for peaceful regional heads elections (Pilkada) last Thursday. The ceremony took place before the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, Banda Aceh.

WITNESSING the signing were Minister of Justice & Human Rights (HAM) Hamid Awaluddin, Minister of Home AffairsM. Maruf, and acting Governor of Naggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) Mustafa Abubakar. Malik Mahmud Al Haytar fromthe Free Aceh Movement (GAM), earlier expected to be present, failed to show up throughout the event. Therefore, his name as a signatory of the Helsinki memorandum of understanding beside Hamid Awaluddin was left vacant.
