Guerrilla Action Against a Self-Sufficiency Project in Merauke

The people of the Marind-Anim traditional community are against a food estate project to create rice fields and sugar cane plantations in Merauke. They are speaking out in Papua and Jakarta.
YASINTA Moiwend should have been able to take advantage of the rainy season towards the end of the year to increase her food stocks. As of mid-2024, this Marind woman who was born in 1964 was still diligently catching fish in nets in the swamp forest around Wogikel Village, Ilwayab District, Merauke Regency, South Papua. The rainy season makes brackish-water fish, such as snapper, mullet, and snakehead, abundant there compared to the dry season.
