Taufiq Kiemas was detained at the military police headquarters of Sriwijaya military regional command, Palembang, in 1966 because in the eyes of the military Taufiq, then chairman of the local chapter of the Indonesian National Students Movement (GMNI), tended to take sides with Bung Karno. In those years, being leftist, centrist or rightist mattered a lot.
