IT must have been the most far-reaching reform to date in Indonesian politics. After 56 years of independence, the Indonesian people finally chose their leader in a direct presidential election, a milestone in the history of the republic. Demand for reform had long been voiced, but it was stifled by the New Order bent on perpetuating the regime in power.
