I have often noted that dialogue in much Indonesian literature feels bland. It is not a strong factor of characterization, and comes across as monotonous. I think this is because until the last couple of decades Indonesian was a second language for the majority of Indonesians, and so vivid speech, intimate speech, and dialogue expressing character was found not in Indonesian, but in regional languages.
