The English scholar of Malay, Sir Richard Winstedt, published his comprehensive Malay Proverbs in 1950, and it seems this is still a major source for works that followed. There were, of course, earlier works that Winstedt himself drew on. These included a book of proverbs in Indonesian/Malay (titled Peribahasa) edited by K Pamuntjak, St. Iskandar and A Madjoindo that was first published in Jakarta in 1943, before Indonesia's independence.
