June 19, 1867Mexican Emperor Maximilian is executed by firing squad on the orders of Benito Juarez, in Queretaro. The event is immortalized in a painting by Manet.

June 20, 1875Japan occupies an island in the Pacific Ocean. After World War II, the island, which is called Okinawa, is controlled by the US. In 1972 the US ends its occupation but still retains a military base there.
