SCORES of people surrounded Dicky Iskandar Dinata, who sat on a chair in front of the detention room in the South Jakarta District Court. The 56-year-old smoked his kretek (clove) cigarettes. He would glance occasionally at the thick files he held. They represented his defense.

Last Tuesday, Dicky was to have presented his defense. A week before that, the prosecutor had demanded a death sentence for him. Dicky has been tried as the perpetrator who
