Writing in Pembela Islam magazine Natsir sharply criticized the nationalists who were disparaging Islam. Yet, he also defended Sukarno.

MOHAMMAD Natsir was once attracted to the nationalist teachings espoused by the Indonesian National Party (PNI). He frequently attended PNI meetings, which always stirred up rebellious sentiments against Dutch colonization.
