His involvement with the PRRI movement forced Natsir and his family to leave Jakarta when the conflict with the Sukarno government came to a head. They wandered around the wilderness of Pasaman in West Sumatra.

IT was almost dawn, about 4:30am. The families of Mohammad Natsir and Burhanudin Harahap arrived in Muara Pauh village in Sungai Batang Maninjau. This was the seventh place they had stopped at while in exile in West Sumatra, after having rested in Lubuk Linggau, Dareh River, and Koto Tuo, Bukittinggi.
