Commissioner General Sofjan Jacoeb, former head of the Jakarta police, has been accused of involvement in the smuggling of 83 luxury cars. But he counter-accuses that police chief Da'i Bachtiar is just trying to get at him, by looking for fault where there is none.

INDONESIA'S huge police force has just been hit by an earthquake. The institution responsible for wiping out crime, at least in theory, has accused one of its own senior officers of committing one. The crime is smuggling and the contraband items were luxury Mercedes cars.
