FROM Balis eight former king doms, Karangasem occupies the easternmost part of the island. Separated only by a strait from Lombok, Karangasem attacked this neighboring island in the late 1600s before it eventually came under the control of the Balinese rajas who ruled from Lombok. In 1895, the Dutch defeated the kingdom and exiled its king to Batavia (now Jakarta).
