A Ray of Light from East Flores

Working abroad is a right guaranteed by the United Nations. Yet social and administrative problems often block many potential workers from pursuing this goal. In a groundbreaking initiative, the East Flores district passed a bylaw to facilitate residents wanting to work overseas.

The young man reached for his money belt to get cash for the coolie at the dock in Maumere, on his way home to Larantuka. The money belt contained Rp32 million in cash, the result of eight years of back-breaking work in Sabah, eastern Malaysia. To his dismay, the money belt was gone, in all likelihood, stolen. He had lost everything. In despair, as the boat pulled away from the wharf and on to deeper waters, he jumped into the sea and drowned.
