ONE afternoon in the forest of Ujung Kulon in July this year, Ridwan Setiawan felt sure he was going to die. Just 5 meters in front of him stood a rhinoceros weighing 1 ton. Ridwan dashed behind a nearby big tree. He was fooled, as the Javan rhino was only scaring him to keep him away from its baby.

Ridwan discovered four new young rhinos in a forest ecosystem control survey in Ujung Kulon. The finding was welcomed with joy. Its natural because R
