September 18, 1961Dag Hammarskjld, Secretary-General of the United Nations, is killed in a suspicious plane crash in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) as he is flying to negotiate a ceasefire in the Congo. In that same year he wins the Nobel Peace prize.
