Cleaning Up the 'Country Within a Country'
The presidential aid scheme will remain a source of graft unless the mechanism is transparent. An audit by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) shows irregularities in this scheme.

While former President Abdurrahman Wahid was sustaining attacks from every direction in February this year, the presidential secretariat bought 18 Kijang vans at a total of Rp2.4 billion for its higher- and lower-ranking officials. Controversies and strong reactions from mixed circles ensued as the money had come from the presidential aid account. Some people cynically queried whether Wahid's was a reform-minded administration.
