THE sudden explosion shattered the tranquility of the night air. The imposing thunder, the pain and deafness caused by the blast lasted for several minutes. Yet this event, which took place on Thursday two weeks ago, did not happen on a mountain or in the far reaches of the jungles of Aceh—places where the Indonesian Army and members of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) have been fighting it out for the past few years.
