The Supreme Court has resisted public pressure for a ban on Golkar. Is this just another example of a conventional judgment based solely on legal formalities?

The Supreme Court has rejected a petition by anti-Golkar groups to outlaw the party that used to be the political machine of the repressive regime of President Suharto. Despite strong public pressure, the highest court of the nation resisted and issued last week a judgment letting Golkar carry on as usual—a judgment many charged was solely based on legal formalities without regard to public sentiments.
