Tightening the Screws on Guterres

The long arm of the law is reaching out to Eurico Guterres. In addition to resisting the security forces and allegations of human rights violations, he's also facing a charge that has been reimposed: illegal possession of weapons.

Guterres' eyes were shimmering with tears. One by one, he hugged friends who came to visit him last week at National Police Headquarters in Kebayoran, South Jakarta. The Deputy Commander of the East Timor Integration Struggle Fighters (Aitarak) was moved by his visitors' tears. The detention room, equipped with air-conditioning, a refrigerator full of soft drinks and fruit, as well as two televisions, was filled with sounds of their sobbing.
