SUTIYOSO has chosen an unconventional way to enter the presidential race. He is not establishing a new party, neither is he waiting to be nominated by one. He seems to think that it might be a waste of time to be playing the usual “political game,”—initially refusing, but really wanting to be offered the job.

Instead, Sutiyoso has decided to “fire the first salvo.” At this early stage, he has declared his intention to become President
